Famous Bhutanese Buddhist Potala
Bhutan is one of the
world's least evangelized nations.
The continued isolationist policies of the government, combined with
the very significant role of the Buddhist monarchy, reinforce the
stronghold of Buddhism complete with strong occult influences. It is
known as the Land of the Dragon. The InterComm Bhutanese Committee
told us that the first Christian converts in the country appeared in
1627 through the Jesuit Priests. In the 1800's, Scottish missionary
William Carey, presented the Gospel through his leprosy-related
Bhutan was effectively closed to all
Christian witness until 1965.
The opening of a road from India into Bhutan brought about 25 years
of a slight relaxation of isolationism during which time India and
other NGOs were able to witness. But since 1990, restrictions have
increased as Christian witness was deemed potentially
"destabilizing" to the Bhutanese culture.
