MEDIA IN MADAGASCAR

“Pastor Rabenja Andriananvalona"

MADAGASCAR - Isn’t that the cute animation film recently seen in theaters? Yes and no!

To us here at InterComm, Madagascar is an island off the southeast coast of Africa. Once a country closed to the preaching of the Gospel - death was the verdict just for hiding or reading a Bible. We praise God that those days are now history. A thriving church exists today in part due to missionaries who invested their lives sharing Christ when the country again allowed religious freedom.

We met Pastor Rabenja Andriananvalona in late 1995. Back then, mail traveled very slowly. “We have pioneer work in the countrysides. Your Torch Kit will be especially useful there. We can also use video in the cities. If we are equipped, we will better be able to evangelize our people effectively. We can also use your French Language videos. 40% of the population of Madagascar are animists. 65% are children and young people, and they are all attracted to media.”

Our package arrived in late 1996. “We appreciate the precious gifts we have received. Thank you for the love God placed in your heart to help us effectively accomplish the task of AVangelism. We pray God will give us wisdom to use them effectively for His glory. Recently we visited 4 places and in some we evangelized, but in others we shared simply to edify and strengthen believers to stay close to the Lord. We thank God for the results.”

Over these last 13 years, Pastor Andriananvalona has been one of the most faithful AVangelists when it comes to reporting and staying in touch. Often when Report Forms are submitted, he draws a simple map of his island on the reverse side, and then details his most-recent ministry locations. Over the years he has done a remarkable job of taking Christ through media to most areas of his island. “Madagascar is the 3rd largest island in the world.” he writes. “There are about 18 million people now, but our roads are not good. It is difficult to get into the countryside. Often we walk long distances, and there is no electricity. That is why the Torch Kit is so valuable to us. We just carry a battery, and we can set up a showing anywhere. People are so glad when we come, and they are open to make the salvation decision. Thank you again for this precious gift - the Torch Kit.”

“No Screen for your Showing?  Just use a Sheet and a Pole!”

“Pastor Andriananvalona using his Torch Kit”

In recent years God has opened opportunity for radio and television ministry for Pastor Andriananvalona, but this has yet to detract his vision to use low-tech media like a Torch Kit where it remains effective across his island. “As chairman of the Malagasy Bible Society, I was honored to give our new president a special new Bible. He is very open to the Bible personally. Praise God.” Many other honors have come to this faithful Pastor. Yet, he remains a truly humble servant of our Lord. What a righteous example he is to us all. In nearly every letter or Report he reminds us how much he appreciates our faithful prayers for him and his team. Please do remain faithful in your prayers for Madagascar. Over the last 12 years we have received Reports listing 165 showings to 23,631 people with 778 souls seeking salvation. What an awesome ministry God has blessed in little Madagascar.

DISCREET AND PROFESSIONAL

Sicily Tiu is a chemical engineer and professor at the Batangas State University in the Philippines. Shortly after we equipped her with some of our video materials she wrote:

“I am very grateful for all of your prayers. There has been some persecution from the administration, but I was able to share the Gospel to 13 high school students recently, and later some 3rd year chemical engineering students. I’m very happy that I have heeded the calling of the Holy Spirit to push through with these presentations. I was assisted by some students, who are products of our Student Ministry here at the university. Right now missionaries are not allowed to enter the campus, but what I was doing together with some Christian faculty members is done in a very discreet and professional way. I’ll always keep in touch to inform you what is happening in my ministry here in the Philippines and also to seek your prayers for this ministry.”

USING THE TORCH KIT

Rev Tchapo Innocent from Malawi writes:

“Now that we have a battery we have begun using the Torch Kit, which you donated to us. The Torch Kit is really helping as you can see on our Report. People are coming to Christ through using it. May your reward be great in Heaven. Using the Torch Kit has really been helpful not only in bringing people to Christ, but in bringing some of the Body of Christ closer to the Lord in their daily walk.”

52 showings to 2,988 with 159 accepting Christ.

TORCH KIT NEEDS

Ever since Torch Kit Production came in-house, we have been having a bit of a run on requests for this handy little low-tech tool, used in remote and village evangelism around the world. There are savings to be had as we assemble Kits here, but expenses, such as Filmstrip Laboratory costs and postage for shipping are a day-to-day reality. If you have been a regular Torch Kit contributor, we need your help today for additional investments in this wonderful ministry tool. If you are a regular contributor to InterComm, a gift over and above your normal contributions would make a great difference at this time. Casual readers of the newsletter can make a huge impact in evangelism around the world by starting now to invest in the Torch Kit Ministry. It takes about $5,000 to purchase a complete group of Filmstrips from our laboratory. It now costs $2,000 in postage to ship 50 Torch Kits to various corners of the world. Our Torch Kit fund is nearly empty, and your participation in re-building this fund will make it possible to keep supplies on hand so that we can immediately ship Torch Kits when requested in the months ahead. Won’t you pray for God’s direction in providing additional resources to build this fund back to a healthy level again. Just indicate which part of your contribution check is for Torch Kits when you send your gifts. May God richly bless you for doing so.

ONLY GOD KNEW

On November 26, we received an email that seemed almost too good to be true. It stated, “Hi, I’m writing to you from Iran. We dubbed PILGRIM’S PROGRESS 15 years ago into Farsi. I wonder if you are interested to have it? Goodbye and be blessed.”. . .You will understand we are not sharing the name of the gentleman who sent the email at this time. We immediately responded, asking for additional information. PILGRIM’S PROGRESS was translated and dubbed through a group of volunteers in his church, and since there was no internet at that time and they were in a very severe period of persecution, during which time 4 of their pastors were killed, it was much too dangerous to even attempt to let us know. It was forbidden to correspond with any foreign Christian organizations.

He writes, “Anyway, I am sorry if I did not communicate with you before dubbing it, but I am happy to tell you this film blessed Iranians for many years by introducing this wonderful story by John Bunyan to them. The book had actually been published and printed in Farsi about 50 years before, but since the book became prohibited, no one could own the book any longer either. We think we did a nice job, but there are some minor technical problems with it. Now we have also sub-titled CHRISTIANA into Farsi, and I will send you copies of both of them when I can find someone traveling out of my country.”

You can imagine our joy at reading this miraculous confession. We are now in the process of receiving from Iran the original dialogue tracks, which we hope to re-mix professionally with our music and sound effects, ultimately sending back to them a professional finished version of the film. We hope to have more details to this story for you in the future, and in God’s good timing, perhaps we can even share the name and the church information with you. For now, please pray for these friends in Iran, who have done God’s work at a time when their lives were literally at risk. How many souls have come to Christ? Only God knows.

A PILGRIM’S PROGRESS
by Lane Anderson

“A journey of 1,000 miles begins with one step.”

So challenged my high school class motto. Yet, how, when, and why does God order such steps? As a child of 4, I was already aware that my father had traveled to a place called China, but soon thereafter he became a Christian movie producer. Around the age of 12, I clearly remember walking down the path, which connected our home from the 1st studio in Michigan. I turned and observed that building in which so much exciting film production, editing, and ministry was taking place. I simply told God in that moment, “This is what I would like to do with my life.” Obviously, I have never forgotten that moment. God in His own remarkable way began to order that journey, but it would be another 3 years before that impact would become more apparent.

Psalm 119:105 reminds us: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path”. God had given a 12-year-old a simple glimpse into the concept - “These feet are made for walking”.
