RUSSIAN LANGUAGE WHY KAZAKHSTAN?

"Lane & Jill with CEO of CNL TV, Maxim Maximou"

Immediately following the fall of the infamous Iron Curtain, every ministry worth its salt pursued opportunities in the former Soviet Union. Just having some piece of the action with Russia in bold print in your literature seemed to excite Christians around the world to invest in foreign missions projects.

In October 1991, when InterComm was barely months old, Russian ministry came knocking on our very undeveloped door. Although it was access to Ken Anderson Films they were seeking, InterComm was invited in late 1991 to a meeting with Protestant Publishers of Moscow. Managing Director, Alexander Semchenko, was going to be in Louisville. Could we come and speak with him? Only 4 hours away, we scheduled an early afternoon meeting at his hotel room. With the help of his translator and Alexander’s limited English, we got off to a quick start. He wanted PILGRIM’S PROGRESS, of course, and eventually 15 films received the old style of Russian translation and began distribution on video tape. The work was not professional lip sync, but rather a much quicker narration style of Russian dubbing common for all foreign-language films. We were thrilled to cooperate, but details and results were scarcely ever available. We became discouraged in the long term, yet praised God for the open door.

"Russian Recording Project Team"

At various times over the years, we felt the need to pursue the Russian Language and finally complete 1st class work. Locating qualified contacts, however, became a challenge. God began opening doors for other countries instead like Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia, and Nigeria. The pattern became very clear. Every major Muslim country by population was being covered with InterComm Language Dubbing Projects, and with the help of SAT-7, the entire Middle East as well. But what about all the Russian speaking Muslims of the former Soviet Union and the Russian people in general, over 200 million of them.

In late 2008, we had cordial correspondence with 2 ministries, but no serious movement towards a joint venture. Finally, we were invited to the National Religious Broadcasters Convention in February 2009 to receive the Seed Award for Evangelism. While roaming the display booths, Jill spotted the Canal TV Display.”Lane,” she said, “those are the people who wrote us about Russian.” We introduced ourselves, and eventually spoke with their USA Developer, Mark Patterson. He became very excited and arranged a meeting with ministry CEO, Maxim Maximou. When could we come to Kazakhstan for detailed discussions?

So in late September on our way to Cambodia, we found ourselves in Almaty at their television production facilities. We learned in answer to our concern about why should we record Russian in Kazakhstan and not Moscow that the quality of Russian spoken in Kazakhstan is more correct and better understandable than any other country in the former Soviet Union. Major dubbing takes place there all the time.

Seldom have we seen so many people working in such close fellowship and just plain close proximity. Like almost shoulder to shoulder in every available nook and cranny. In fact, their 1st TV production equipment operates under the platform of their on-site church - the former KGB Propaganda Center. These friends want to start with the typical package of 5 films. The priority of our visit, however, will be to completely teach these talented leaders every step of the dubbing process. Their goal, thereafter, is to record, after we leave, every other film InterComm can provide from our catalog.

"Beautiful Orthodox Church in Almaty"

So what about the Kazkh Language? With a 98% literacy rate more than 80% of the people speak Russian, as their 1st language, while Kazkh makes slow progress to again become the language of choice. Thus, we have an unprecedented opportunity to work with these anxious, educated, motivated, and very talented people. How we praise God for again opening this door. We look forward to His provision for a Project Date and the “Green Light” to return and serve the Russian speaking people of the world.

MONGOLIAN CHRISTMAS EVE

In 1994, InterComm dubbed a video of the Christmas story for children in the Mongolian Language. However, the bulk of the videos never made it through Customs. A copy of this same video was recently given to a returning missionary to Mongolia, who used it this Christmas Eve in a town in the middle of the Mongolian Gobi Desert. This same missionary served a Christmas dinner to 14 Mongolian teachers, and the young son of one of them. As part of the festivities, she showed the video, MARY & JOSEPH. None of them had ever before heard anything about the birth of Jesus, and this children’s version in the Mongolian Language was perfect for their 1st introduction to our Savior. What an exciting reminder that nothing done for God is ever wasted. Won’t you please pray for the salvation of these 15 people, who excitedly and for the very first time heard the Good News of Jesus Christ this recent Christmas Eve.

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
Unreported Ministry

We try to highlight from time to time some of the unreported ministry taking place that doesn’t show up under the movie screen on the back page of each months’ TORCH. Here’s a great example sent from our Project Director, Rev. Shalem Israel, who led the Telugu lip sync dubbing recording project in Andhra Pradesh State, India.

“Over the last month I had the privilege of sharing the Word of God and giving spiritual edification to over 5,000 Telugu speaking Christians in 30 churches in UAE. I shared about our dubbing Project in the Telugu Language and learned that many of these Telugu Christian families had already viewed some of these videos while visiting in India, bought copies, and brought them back to the UAE, duplicated these copies, and shared them among their Christian friends for ongoing ministry. Praise the Lord! The ministry has reached much further than we ever dreamed possible, and God continues to open doors and open hearts throughout the Telugu speaking world.”

BROKEN INTO MANY PIECES

Evangelist B Ravi Kanth of India wrote:

“We loaned our Torch Kit to some co-laborers here, who took it and showed it in the Tangellamudi Village. I regret to tell you the Hindu extremists came forward and forced them to stop showing the Filmstrips. We asked why, and thereafter had much discussion. They grabbed all of our items and threw them violently against the floor. The Kit has broken into many pieces, really. Our hearts also were broken. We wept. It is a Hindi State now. So persecution has taken place from here to there. But we can do nothing except pray for them. Please join us in prayer for them, as we are doing! I also request you to send me replacement equipment.” Of course, InterComm has done so.

Since 1999, we have received Reports of showings to 16,284 persons with 532 decisions for Jesus Christ. In our opinion, a great value for our $300 Torch Kit.

IMPORTANT TOOLS

Rev Gaspard G Mamang of Central African Republic wrote:

“We were very excited with our first experiences with the Torch Kit. Many people who watched these Films said that it was a new method of presenting the Gospel. Others said it was the same way of telling the Gospel used by our parents. Many pastors did not hesitate to ask me how they could get these important tools to be used in their areas. Large numbers of the people who had received Christ came to me to receive Bible study lessons. Thank you and do keep praying for us.”

He reported 69 showings to 39,725 people with 10,120 responding for salvation.

A PILGRIM’S PROGRESS
by Lane Anderson

Taiwan, Part 1

Whereas Japan had introduced me to the Orient, Taiwan uniquely displayed the Chinese culture. Visible differences were stark by contrast. Statues and pictures of Nationalist Government Leader, General Chiang Kai-Shek, were everywhere. Taiwan was at this time still under Marshall Law and would continue until after the General’s death in 1975. Foreign missionaries, many of whom had fled China during the Maoist Revolution, had been given sanctuary here. For now, taking Christ to China meant entering through a Taiwanese door. Overseas Crusades Field Director, Les Wait, met us upon arrival at the Taipei Airport. Final logistics for our joint drama film, featuring their ministry, took immediate priority. More on this another time.

That evening we were in for a special treat. The Chinese celebrate October 10 each year in a big way. It is their last major Festival of the Chinese Year and commemorates the overthrow of the corrupt Ching (Manchu) Dynasty and the Republic of China. We were invited to the Palace Hotel for the Double 10 Banquet Feast that Thursday evening. Never in my life had I seen such elegance. Food, should I say delicacies, were served one course at a time. I lost count on how many varieties we enjoyed. After dinner, the men decided to walk back to the OC Compound. Our belts were tight, the distance was reasonable, and the weather was warm and balmy. The sights and smells of a major city vary after dark. Thus, it was I first observed working girls along our route, trying to survive the only way they could. The realities of a fallen world were a visual reminder as to why we had made this trip in the first place. People needed to be informed of God’s work being done around the world. Christian films in the early 1960's were becoming the best mass media tools available, and with God’s help, we would glorify His message through our drama, featuring the ministry of Overseas Crusades.
