PRISONS MINISTRY

"Rev Joseph Otchere of Ghana"

Late 1993, Rev Joseph Otchere from Accra, Ghana attended 2 Christian Conferences in Texas. During his extensive visit, he introduced himself, “I have been a pastor for 20 years. I’ve pioneered 10 churches and a National Prison Ministry. I’m now the director of this work, currently serving 36 prisons across the country. We are interested in using some of your films. I should be grateful if your office could assist me.”

In a follow-up phone call we learned that Rev. Otchere had accepted Christ in 1960 due to the message of John Bunyan’s classic book, PILGRIM’S PROGRESS. Imagine the joy we experienced providing 5 of our Christian 16mm Films among them PILGRIM’S PROGRESS. We also provided CHRISTIANA, Pilgrim’s companion story. “At 1:00 pm today I received your big parcel of films. I promise to use these to the glory of God. You are the very first ministry to support us with these kinds of tools.” All 5 films would be hand carried to Ghana.

Keeping his word, he wrote us early in 1994. “I had asked you to pray with me that through these films many may come to know the Lord. I’ve already seen God work. In our 1st showing at one of the prisons, 40 officers gave their lives to Christ, watching SOME THROUGH THE FIRE.” Later that same year, he shared, “God has thrust us through the barriers of what man calls impossible, providing us Christian 16mm Films. This has brought our prisons’ ministry into a whole new dimension in mass Gospel Outreach in Ghana. Just this summer I also showed films in Anya to help establish a new church. 40 people who attended that night and accepted Christ have stood with us, as founding members of this new ministry.”

As so often happens, these new ministry directions seem to leave the concept of reporting or any other form of communication behind. Even so, we believed God was continuing to do good things, but silence was a reality for over 6 years. Then one day, as if out of the blue, a Report arrived in 2001. “Films are very effective in prison soul winning. I’ve seen prisoners shedding tears during these stories. Prison officers have requested that we must show these films in every prison in the country. But we need your help again, sir. Our 16mm Projector is old and must be replaced. Plus we need more films. Can you help us?”

His Report covered 28 showings to over 12,000 people with 4,000 registered conversions.

Beginning in 2001, he began regular correspondence and has done reasonably well in reporting. To date he has reported 144 showings to over 70,000 people with 19,329 conversions. We have sent him 16mm Films, Video Tapes, 16mm Projector Bulbs, a Torch Kit, a 16mm Projector with more Films plus many additional videos over the years. “Many of the prisoners weep bitterly while watching your videos. Afterward they willingly give their lives to Christ. These films are bringing a higher spiritual explosion than we’ve ever seen before. I am deeply touched by the results. Included among the converts are many Muslims.”

We praise God that over these past 17 years God continues to answer prayer, as Rev Otchere and his team continue to press forward in ministry. Your prayers for AVangelism bring powerful results.

LOSING MY VOICE

Pastor Jimmy Bamuke-Ruakoah of Uganda wrote:

“Many people turn up in large numbers and observe silence during our showings. Believers, church leaders, and even government leaders are encouraging me to show these films and have told me they are the best tools to reach people today with the Gospel of salvation. Despite this, however, I still face the problem of losing my voice when there is a large turnout, for I have no portable speaker and microphone. Thank you for your continuous prayers for me and our team here, as we see the mighty hand of God Almighty working.”

Reported 22 showings to 7,593 with 2,005 decisions for Jesus Christ.

ALWAYS REJOICING

Pastor M Isaiah from India writes:

“God is using the Filmstrips in a wonderful way. They especially help children to understand and gain knowledge of God’s plan for their lives. Because of these stories, many are committing their lives to Christ. The video ministry is also very effective among young people. I thank God for you all, because of this Film Ministry and how many are choosing to accept Jesus Christ. I am so glad to say that I am always rejoicing through this ministry. God is using it in a wonderful way to help us proclaim the Gospel. Please continue in your prayers for this ministry.”

A Report of 78 showings to 6,600 people with 64 decisions for Christ.

TEACHING THE WORD OF GOD MORE EASILY

Evangelist Samuel Katabira from Uganda writes:

“The exercise of teaching the Word of God by AVangelism is good. People like it because they understand the Lord’s message more easily. Video messages make the entire teaching of the Word of God easier and simplifies for the people’s understanding of God’s Word. We can say that God is helping us do our work excellently. We still are in need of your spiritual and physical support, however. We especially need your lovely prayers. It is a challenge to follow-up on all the converts, and we ask you to pray that God will help us do a better job.”

A Report of 141 showings to 10,170 people with 1,076 responses.

A PILGRIM’S PROGRESS
by Lane Anderson

Taiwan, Part 2

It was in the Overseas Crusades compound in Taipei, Taiwan, that I first met Norm and Muriel Cook. Norm was slated to play the part of our film missionary in our drama to be filmed in Hong Hong. These 2 young dynamic servants not only made an immediately positive impression on my young spirit, but they were to touch my life over and over again in the years ahead. Unknown to us before we arrived, Norm Cook was a native of Warsaw, Indiana, the home town of Ken Anderson Films and now InterComm. No home visit by the Cooks thereafter occurred without a visit to our studio and usually lunch or dinner. The spiritual blessing and challenges posed through the years have greatly impacted my life. They didn’t treat me like Ken’s kid. I was an individual. Norm and Muriel were the kind of Christians, who invested themselves in people and in the years to come Jill was to likewise benefit from their personal style of living Christ.

Friday, October 11, was spent brainstorming the script and fine honing its message. Logistics were nailed down for our scheduled November shoot. We were staying in the Overseas Crusades Compound, a group of buildings surrounded by glass embedded walls with a gate for protection, which kept out most thieves most of the time. That evening a special dinner had been planned in our honor. So maybe they couldn’t equal the Double 10 Banquet in presentation and glamour, but they did introduce us to their fantastic Mongolian Barbecue, cooked on a heavy purpose-built iron lid over a very hot fire. We enjoyed strips of pork, chicken, vegetables with numerous spices and sauces, all combined in a large bowl. These delights were dumped on to the iron lid where they sizzled and popped and smoked, as they quickly super cooked into an extremely tasty concoction. A little over 30 years later, I was disappointed to learn, while running a Recording Project in Mongolia, that no such food preparation was practiced.
