MYSTERIOUS ASSAM

“Rev & Mrs Thangchuilo Varte"

Far to the north in the eastern arm of India resides a people most of us hear little or nothing about, unless we support God’s work. They live in Assam - a state of India which is 65% Hindu, 30% Muslim, and barely 3% Christian. In fact, as populations rapidly increase, the percentage of Christians continues to decrease, even after 2 centuries of Christian work.

Rev Thangchuoilo Varte resides in the north Cachar Hills Region. We first met in 1984, 7 years before InterComm was established. Back then, Ken Anderson was a regular instructor in Singapore at the Haggai Institute. Every trip included a few Torch Kits stashed into Ken’s very large suitcase, back when travelers could still carry 70 pounds of luggage. These Kits were carefully given to the most rural, least equipped saints. Rev Varte was such a man. Over the next 12 years, he silently ministered with this tool. Truly God knew the results. Then in 1997, the silence was broken. He had loaned the Torch Kit to a church worker, and it had been destroyed by fire. “Thus, sir, advise me how and when I can get again such a Filmstrip Projector in the near future. It is very very useful in my area where people are uneducated.”

By early 1998 he wrote, “I am overwhelmed with joy to report the package has safely arrived. Thank you for the valuable materials you gave me for the sake of our Heavenly Father. From now on wherever I go, I will start my services with these Filmstrips.” Although Rev Varte had retired from the pulpit in 1992, he took a position as Education Secretary with his denomination. AVangelism was to play a major role in his plans. On his first Report he listed showings to 2,500 people. “I beg to add one point more. Here in our area it is difficult to approach non-Christians as they hate our Christianity. They don’t permit us to even stay overnight in their villages. They don’t like preaching, singing, or Bible teaching, but they are interested to see our Filmstrip Stories. We can seldom seek new converts. So we show the films and pray God to touch their hearts.”

Later when video equipment became available, we sent a supply of Hindi and Nepali Language video tapes along with English selections. “Thank you so much for this great gift of video, which I never ever dreamed about. We can show the English video in the schools in the English classes. We should tell you, often I cannot show the Filmstrips or Video, but God has shown me how to use the story concepts from these dramas as I preach all over our towns.”

In 2002 he was led of the Lord to open a school for young neglected children. “I am hoping this institution may be the right place for evangelism.” Always a man of vision especially well into his elder years, we have been regularly blessed by correspondence with Rev Varte. An unselfish servant he passes on his media to encourage others with whom he ministers. Reports may not be passed back, but many assurances have come through the years that these media tools continue to be shown.

Then in 2003 Tribal conflicts erupted. Villages were burned. Many were killed. Churches were closed. Schools were interrupted. Curfews were set. This has now gone on for years. But Rev Varte remained positive in his love for the Lord and his desire to re-establish Media Ministry. All this remains in God’s hands. We have been blessed to know this saint the past 25 years, to equip him, and to pray with him, as well. Please praise God with us for His saints toiling in troubled corners of the world. Reports received over the years indicated the Gospel being presented by Rev Varte to over 12,000 souls through media. Only God, however, truly knows the heart. Please pray that those who accepted Christ will continue to grow strong in their love for the Lord and their ongoing service.

K’HO DUBBING PROJECT

Our friends in Vietnam, who made it possible for the Vietnamese Language Project to be such a great success, are looking ahead to creating new language recording versions of some of the InterComm productions. In the K’ho Language, spoken by minority Tribal peoples, currently a laptop computer is needed to make this work possible. A $1,000 contribution is requested to fund that purchase. If you can help make this purchase possible, please respond to the information on the back page of the TORCH.

COULDN’T DO VIDEO MINISTRY

Rev YL Steward from India writes:

“I have been able to use my Torch Kit among the Ollo Tribe on the Myanmar border, and the response has been very good. They are receptive to the Gospel right now. They just need someone to come and tell them about Jesus Christ. 51 have already taken baptism. It is all because of your prayer and the tools you have given us that we can do this good ministry. Do pray for the Ollo Tribe, especially the new converts, as half of these people are in my country and the other half in Myanmar. I am sorry we couldn’t do video ministry in the villages due to no electricity and video players.”

He sent a Report of 12 Torch Kit Showings to 711 people with 51 accepting Jesus Christ and taking baptism.

.MEMBERS START TITHING

Pastor Jacob Lungu from Zambia writes:

“We really appreciate the new videos you have sent us. They have helped us to explain some of the teachings. God bless you. The film, MONEY TALKS, for example, helped encourage 3 members of our church to start tithing. Also, 2 families have come back to the Lord through the drama Filmstrip story, FAITH’S FAMILY. There is a lot to be done in the Kingdom of God. May God bless you for the good work you are doing.”

He reported 12 showings to 174 people with 39 accepting Christ.

A PILGRIM’S PROGRESS
by Lane Anderson

Sweet 16. Can you remember back that far? To be sure, for some of us it is quite a journey. It was the summer of 1962, and I was now the proud owner of my very first Driver’s License. What an exciting time. My 2 brothers, Donn and Max, one a year older, one a year younger, and me made for cheap, but reliable summer film crews for the fledgling ministry, Ken Anderson Films. BEYOND THESE SKIES was scheduled to be filmed at the Seattle World’s Fair in a joint project with Doug Ross and Seattle Youth For Christ. Wow! The space needle was and remains breathtaking, and, of course, the daily Moody Science Demonstrations shared the wonders of God’s creation, highlighted by a 1 million volt of electricity shot through the human body. Amazing!

A special bonus on the Project, I received my first and only float plane ride while in Seattle. But it was the message of the new film which really stands the test of time - sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with young people traveling to the Fair from all over the world. A once in a lifetime opportunity for some to accept Christ while visiting the USA. Today beyond the skies of Seattle, these opportunities continue in college towns all across our country. Perhaps you and your church reach out to such students in your local college or university. After all, you may be the only American willing to share Christ with that special person - have you considered it? Will you pray about it? Let 1 Corinthians 9:22 strengthen your resolve today.
