ENGLISH FOR JESUS

"The Artyom Oleksin Family"

Travel north from Ukraine, east from Poland, south from Lithuania and Latvia, or west from Russia, and you find the country of Belarus, which translates - White Russia. Not easy for most of us to locate on our globes, but our Lord has many special friends residing within this emerging country.

“I want to use the effective means of AVangelism for especially reaching children and teenagers, winning them for Christ.” This was what Mr. Artyom Oleksin wrote as his AVANGELISM Vision Statement in 2006. “I work as a children’s pastor in our church with about 100 Sunday school students. I also work in our Christian kindergarten, which is in its 2nd year in 2006. We plan to start a Christian grade school program next year. This is very unusual for it is the 1st in our country. In 2003, we began Christian camping for children with over 700 kids participating. In 2007, we hope to expand with 6 camps abroad in Poland, Lithuania, and Ukraine. We are expecting an additional 500 children from these. There is a Russian Proverb that says - It is better to see one time than to hear seven times. So we realize how powerful media is, not just to say, but to show.”

"Artyom Oleksin & Son Receiving English Disks."

InterComm provided training CD’s and a wide selection of English Language videos for children. This was followed by an 18-month period of silence, which was quite a surprise. But in December 2008, a great letter arrived. “We want to use your films for a new program we will start for English study in our Sunday school and among non-believers. We are preparing a 2-month course and want to translate your films, DOMBI and JONAH & THE BIG STORM. We will give the course the name, EFJ (English for Jesus). The course is designed for kids 5 to 8 and 9 to 12. Teaching will take place each Sunday during our 3 services. Could you please send us the English transcripts to make our translation work easier? We expect to start teaching in February of 2009.”

"Students in EFJ Viewing DOMBI."

“I’m writing to update you on our progress. We divided DOMBI and JONAH into 8 parts for the 5 to 8 year olds, and 4 parts for the 9 to 12 year olds. Every part is watched several times. At first, kids learn new words. Next, they learn new phrases from the previous section, and new words from the new section. The next Sunday they will watch the 1st part again with the teacher translating, and the 2nd part to tickle their ears with new phrases, and the 3rd part when they learn new words. On the 4th lesson, children will try to translate for themselves, etc. It’s a long process. Even in 2 ½ months it is not enough, but it is a good start. We have 5 teachers and 2 helpers. After the 1st attempt, we will meet and discuss how to improve the process for the next sessions. This is our 1st experience, and we are trusting God to give us better results. We actually had 3 each of the younger and older groups in our 1st effort. There are some new local children who have recently started visiting our Sunday school. My desire is for the EFJ Program to draw the children in, help them learn English, of course, but also allow us to share the Gospel with them. I have worked with children 10 years now. We don’t just want them to repeat information. We want them to come to Jesus Christ through salvation. We are praying to expand this program to a local center for troubled children. Then also next September we want to advertise widely in our local area and would hope many parents will be eager to bring their children. If other churches want to develop this Project, is it okay with InterComm if we share it with them?”

Of course, we said YES.

"Belarus Students Learning English from InterComm Films."

The creative juices of God’s servants always inspire us here at InterComm to continue on in the work of equipping National Leaders. Thank you for making it possible for us to equip these leaders, who are gathering fruit these days using AVangelism in Belarus.

CRYING FROM GUILT

Evangelist J Aaron Wright from Liberia writes:

“How excited we were that the 16mm Projector and Films finally arrived safely. Last Saturday, we had our 1st showing of PILGRIM’S PROGRESS. There were a total of 412 persons in attendance. At the end of the film I took the stage and summarized the story. I reminded them that every one of us has sinned like Pilgrim. Therefore, we need to confess our sins unto God and repent and forsake them and ask Jesus Christ to become our Lord and Savior. You could see people crying of their guilt before God. So we invited them, and 133 people gave their lives to Jesus Christ, accepting Him as Lord and Savior. On the following Sunday, 62 of these people joined us in service for worship at our church. We want to thank almighty God, who is to receive all the glory, and we want to thank you and InterComm for creating this partnership between us.”

RISKING ALL FOR CHRIST

"Justus Okoth Arriving at Destination by Ox Cart."

Rev Justus Okoth from Kenya writes:

“We have been traveling into the bush, as we call it, the more dangerous parts of our country, where we must worry about armed bandits and wild animals. We cannot afford public transportation. So we travel by ox cart. On this trip, I fell into a thorny bush at night when it was dark and could not remove the thorns because we were too far from a hospital. So I had to endure the pain, even as the areas of my body became swollen. We have been sharing the Kiswahili videos you produced for us. So many people have come so many miles, even at night, to watch our showings. Your films are still the most effective and best tools for evangelism in these remote and difficult parts of my country. On this last trip we narrowly escaped death and wondered at times if we would even survive. Thank you so much for your prayers, which have saved us, but we count it all joy to continue risking all for Christ our only hope. Here’s our Report. We had 11 showings to 11,500 people with 3,520 responding to accept Jesus Christ. We are always praying for all of you. May the Lord continue to bless you.”

THEY IDENTIFY THEMSELVES

Evangelist Gabriel Krabadja from the Central African Republican writes:

“Audiovisual Ministry produces more impact in rural villages, because they identify themselves with the actors and the stories. This helps them automatically ask forgiveness for their sins. There are so many villages that do not have film showings, and we would like to travel there. But they are so far away and transportation is expensive. Even so, we praise God for everything that He has done through us and the Torch Kit Ministry.”

79 Showings to 7,150 people with 1,176 decisions.

A PILGRIM’S PROGRESS
by Lane Anderson

Jules Verne wrote the exciting novel, AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS, in 1873. At this time in history, few men and women ever ventured further than 100 miles from home in their entire lifetime. 83 years later, Michael Todd transformed this exciting novel into an extraordinary major motion picture with David Niven, playing the role of Phileas Fogg. Filmed in wide-screen 70mm, this 1956 production costs just under 6 million dollars and earned over 100 million worldwide. Eventually, it won 5 of the 8 Academy Awards for which it was nominated.

In 1956, dramatic Christian films were still all new to church audiences, most of whom did not own a 16mm Projector. Quality was lacking both in production, acting, and screenplay. Most churches still opposed Christians attending a secular theater. That’s why our family made frequent trips from our Wolf Lake, Michigan home to Grand Rapids. My parents needed to see and learn from top secular films to improve the look and quality of Christian films. Theaters in Grand Rapids became a cinema classroom and also kept our local Christian friends and neighbors from becoming offended through the process.

Perhaps in 1963 when my father invited me to work my way around the world, we would not experience life as Jules Verne penned it, but then - just maybe! Producing 4 new films in multiple countries was a huge challenge for our small team of 3, and God would provide many memorable moments. I Corinthians 2:9 was about to explode through my days. So join me, won’t you, in the next many adventures I’ll be sharing with you, as - yes - we go - Around the World in 80 Days!
