THE THIRD TORCH

"Rev Chitekwe Explaining the Torch Kit Filmstrip Showings"

Rev Dyson Chitekwe from Blantyre, Malawi first met Ken Anderson as a 1980 participant at the Haggai Institute in Singapore. Malawi is a small southeast African nation of about 12 million people. Its Christian history can be directly linked to 19th century missionary, Dr David Livingston of Great Britain. The current literacy rate in Malawi is just around 60%. Although you won’t read about this in your local newspapers, Malawi is one of the African countries currently being devastated by the AIDS virus, and there is a life expectancy of only 43 years.

In 1986, Rev Chitekwe began communicating with InterComm about the Torch Projector. A Kit was finally shipped to him in April 1987. Over the next 9 years, we received no correspondence from Rev Chitekwe. Then, in 1996 he was back in contact again needing a new Torch Projector. In faith, this was provided in 1996. However, his 1st Report did not arrive until 1999. Unfortunately, correspondence with many Christian leaders around the world can be very limited. Often they just can’t afford the postage and paper. For many reasons, we did not hear from this brother again for an additional 5 years. He had no personal support, no international support. His ministry was extremely small, and he was greatly financially challenged. Then, his 2nd Projector was broken. God kept him busy preaching the Gospel. Yet, he missed the audiovisual ministry very much. So he sent a make-up Report to us as best he could and shared, “Everywhere I took the Kit was a great encouragement to the people. They had many questions. We took much time in our counseling for those who wished to accept Christ.”

In June 2004, his greatest disappointment occurred when his beloved wife and partner of 25 years died of a heart attack. Together they had raised 7 children of their own, plus 4 orphans. What great hearts God gives to His servants around the world, who often have so little of the world’s resources, yet, take on others in greater need.

We felt compelled to provide Rev Chitekwe his 3rd Torch Kit, which was received in Malawi by late 2005. Since that time, we have actually received 2 Reports in one year - a first in our relationship with him. The lack of personal transportation has kept him from greater activity. Yet. God continues to bring fruit through his labors. God not only blessed his ministry with souls won. God has also provided a new helpmate, as of July 2006. “Everywhere I go these days people ask me to come again. They are so happy to see the Torch Filmstrips.” Often times Rev Chitekwe travels by bus, and then walks an additional 5 to 10 miles to reach the villages. What great dedication!

So why have we shared this man’s ministry with you? It is because he like so many quality men and women of God around the world struggle much more greatly than most of us can even imagine. He deeply loves the Lord. He deeply loves his family. He desires greater ministry opportunities. Yet, the challenges are often overwhelming. We have, however, received 4 Reports over the intervening years with showings to nearly 4,000 people. 371 souls were carefully counseled and received Jesus Christ as personal Savior. Doesn’t Rev Chitekwe sound like a good investment even through these 21 years of struggling together. We think you will agree that Heaven is certainly richer.

NEW SAVARA LANGUAGE JONAH

"Recording Savara Language JONAH in Viskahapatnam, India"

Rev Shalem Israel, who headed up the Telugu Language Recording Project in India, which included a bonus Project in the Oriya Language for the Orissa State, is perhaps one of the most talented self-taught audiovisual specialists with whom we’ve had the privilege of working around the world. It was without hesitation, therefore, that we left behind in his capable hands, a complete Recording Kit, not only to assist him in his ongoing radio ministry, but with the hope that the skills learned during our Project together might likewise allow him to do additional Language Recording Work. Recently Shalem informed us that he had completed his first Language Recording Venture, this for the Savara Language, a people group of a little over 300,000 individuals living in his State of Andhra Pradesh and the surrounding States as well. A majority of the Savara people live in the hill country, and the majority of their tribes are cultivators. Some are weavers of cloth and others are basket makers or potters. The largest majority of these people have become Hindus.

In early June the Savara Language version of the Bible story, JONAH & THE BIG STORM, held its World Premiere. God provided both excellent transportation and excellent weather. An entire village of over 300 people gathered to watch this video. It was a great miracle for these people to be able to enjoy this movie in their own language. Shalem says, “Now we have already distributed 20 copies of the Savara JONAH VCD and have left an additional 80 copies for further distribution and ministry. Do please pray with us for God’s anointing upon this powerful story of God’s love and forgiveness for those who will hear the message of this film in their language, the 1st film ever known to be recorded into Savara.”

30,000 MISSIONARIES

Shalem Israel
also reported in early June that by his count conservatively he estimates 30,000 video copies of the films InterComm dubbed into the Telugu Language are now circulating in his State. He’s personally responsible for thousands of duplicate copies being distributed and has encouraged those receiving them to likewise make copies and increase distribution all over the State. More than 100 million people, who speak Telugu in Andhra Pradesh, India and other areas of the world, need to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Won’t you pray that God will bless these individual films and the messages they contain, as they create a hunger for knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ to those souls currently worshiping other gods. How we praise God for Shalem Israel and his vision to reach those who speak the primary language of Telugu.

WHAT PEOPLE SEE

Pastor Aliu Blessing Johnson from Akure, Nigeria writes:

“There has never been a time at our Media Showings when people have not been enthusiastic about the film we are showing, and so many are responding positively with full readiness to give their lives to Christ. There is no doubt that what people see has so much more impact upon their hearts than what they just hear or read. We shall ever continue to be grateful unto God for InterComm, making available these ministry tools because so many souls have been won for Jesus Christ through your ministry.”

Showings to 12,023 people with 830 responding to the Gospel.

WE SEE GOD WORKING

Rev Richard Katarahweire from Kabale, Uganda writes:

“I want to thank God for the audiovisual ministry, made available from InterComm. We have resumed very seriously our efforts. We are now showing videos every Sunday, and our ministry is moving forward very well, especially with the youth. Recently, as you see, 42 souls have been won for Jesus Christ. We see God working in our churches and in our people, who have been sensitized after seeing so many of the different videos, provided by InterComm.”

37 FAITHFUL LEADERS

Rev Jackson Dimba from Salima, Malawi writes:

“God is moving in a powerful manner through the free evangelism tools InterComm has provided me. We’re delighted to see that audiovisual teachings are proving to be a blessing to those all over our country, including urban areas. A year after receiving the audiovisual materials, I have now trained 37 faithful leaders to help us in their churches. The response to this challenge is that churches have been transformed. We thank you for your encouragement and for your help in this great ministry.”

252 showings to 1,825 people with 1,195 responding.

HEARTBEAT
by Ken Anderson

(For a period of time, InterComm will be sharing Heartbeats from the Ken Anderson Films era.)

In the Gospel of Mark, we read about 4 men who lowered their paralytic friend through the roof of a house to the feet of the Savior. The account states, “When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, ‘Son, your sins are forgiven.’” Having read the account several times, I’ve become convinced that these 4 men did not actually have great faith so much as active faith. “Faith comes by hearing”, as we all know, and “hearing by the Word of God.” So it is not a matter of generating great faith in our minds and hearts, but rather, simply acting upon the promises given to us in the Bible. As Hudson Taylor discovered, “It’s faith and the faithfulness of God that matters.”
