JUSTUS AND JANICE

"Justus & Janice Okoth"

“Dear beloved in the harvest of Christ: ‘He who dwells in the shelter of the most high will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will serve the Lord. He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust.’”

Thus began a typical letter from Justus and Janice Okoth of Nairobi, Kenya, who were featured in the TORCH Newsletter just over 10 years ago this month. We want to bring them back to your attention because of a letter we received.

"The Team Setting up for Evening Film Showing in the Bush"

“Thank you so much for your prayers, your encouraging emails, and most-recently the tools for evangelism. We are just so glad for what the Lord is doing through InterComm, and your prayers mean a lot to us. The Kiswahili video disks you have sent will be especially helpful to us, but the English can be used in many situations also, as we reach out to the unreached through your films in one of the worst and most dangerous places in Kenya. We’ve been working in the headquarters area for the Mongikis. These people are known as the worst terror group in Kenya. They not only attack people, but often times cut off their heads. Even my wife, Janice, has witnessed some of the terror in this area, and some of our team members have been beaten when we’ve attempted to witness to them before our film shows. Many innocent Kenyans have been found dead in this region, and for many people it is considered a no-travel zone. But God has called us to minister here. Even though they have threatened to burn down a new church that we started. But we are here by faith, and we have seen the mighty hands of the Lord protect us. As you know, we do not have our own transportation, and this creates a bigger risk for ourselves and our film equipment. We cannot sit back and see souls dying without being given an opportunity to hear the Gospel of Christ in a language that they can hear and understand.

"Janice Okoth Handing out Literature Hut to Hut"

Let me tell you that recently we were preparing to show the Kiswahili version of your film, PILGRIM’S PROGRESS. One of the worst criminals in Kenya had accepted Christ and was with us to give his testimony on how he’d been stealing cars at gunpoint and selling them in nearby Tanzania. He was a man who had killed many innocent people, but who God had redeemed through the blood of Christ. Now we are having the privilege of having ministry in his home area, and because of his witness, we are seeing many other people, who lived evil lives, turning their lives over to Jesus Christ, who is forgiving their sins. Christ is the only answer for Africa, and Africa needs Christ. He is the only one who can transform lives and give eternal peace. So we keep coming to these difficult areas by faith never knowing what will happen to us, but knowing for sure that the Lord wanted us to reach out to these people with his love and forgiveness. So we count it as great joy, as we continue risking all for Jesus Christ, our only hope.

"Mode of Transport to Film Showings to the Mongikis"

Last week we were out in eastern Africa, screening films with great results. We didn’t have transportation, and we faced many difficulties. So we did not make as many film shows as we had hoped. The mosquitoes were heavy and bit us all over our bodies. Janice came back very sick, and she is slow to recover. I’m also feeling some malaria again, and I need your prayers. But your films are very powerful tools for evangelism, and we ask your beloved prayer partners to please continue praying for us so that we might be effective in our part of the world. It means so very much to our family to know that you are behind us in this mission work and that you are praying for us. We are so grateful for all the tools you have provided to make this ministry possible. We will continue to travel into these dangerous areas, because we are after souls that no human being can kill. Please know that it is well with our souls. We want you to know that we believe in you and that you are very special to us. We love you so much and have been always praying for all of you. Please consider us part of your family and your indigenous missionaries here in Kenya. - Justice & Janice”

Over the years we have received some rather significant Reports from these AVangelists, listing a total of 169 showings to 353,220 people with 181,289 people responding to the salvation opportunity. As we like to remind you, these are the Reports we receive. Only God truly knows a man’s heart.

COMFORT OF THE CROSS

Rev Samaila M Mangu of Maiduguri, Nigeria writes:
“It is wonderful that your package of video disks arrived. They are really blessing us at this moment. We had some setbacks, and we are not able to go to the village, as we had planned. I notice that we are being targeted by the evil one. So we began praying more for the work, and for God’s protection. I took some of the disks with me for a special meeting in the country of Chad. While I was there, we used a friends laptop to show a small group of 12 the film, PILGRIM’S PROGRESS. The batteries lasted all the way through the film, and afterwards, 4 Muslim young men told the lady of the house that they desired the comfort of the cross of Jesus. The film had really spoken to them. The woman who keeps that house is eager to continue discipling these young men, who are her neighbors. So she will be meeting with them, praying with them, and guiding them in better understanding the Christian way.”

NO ELECTRICITY

Rev Dennis Nimley of Monrovia, Liberia writes:

“I find joy in working with your ministry and will soon be sending the Report I promised. As I thought over your last letter, I realized that there was an unreached mission field in my own backyard. I just overlooked these villages, which are about 2 hours walk away. Most of these guys are Muslim, but I think that they will appreciate the Torch Kit ministry, because electricity has not yet reached this end of the township. Please pray along with me, as I reach out to these people in the near future.”

GOD’S LAPTOP

Pastor Venjie Firmalino from Radio Station DXKI in whose radio studio we completed the Philippines Project writes:

“How are you? We miss you here in Dixieland (DXKI). We are happy to inform you that our Ilongo and Cebuano Films are now beginning its toll in touching the lives of our people from the children through young people and adults. The audiences are responding after the shows, because they can understand very well what they are viewing. That’s why we always thank God for you and your love to God and your commitment in reaching different people for Christ through Media Evangelism. Press on in your work, because it is being recorded in God’s Laptop.”

SNAKEBITE

Rev Tchapo Innocent of Marka, Malawi writes:

“We enjoy using the Torch Kit because each time we use it, we are seeing people come to Christ. We make plans and pray to God for each visit into new areas, and we thank you for your prayers as well. Even though we are lacking many things, we desire to serve the Lord better. Our almighty God is really blessing the use of the Torch Kit, and you’ll notice we have been using the story, SNAKEBITE, quite often. There are so many snakes in our forests here, which bite people quite often. Even my own daughter, Emily, who is 14, was bitten last month. She is now well. Our neighbor’s 13 year old son had a snakebite 2 weeks ago, and he is also recovering. Now, as this story also shows the way to salvation, people who fear or have experienced snakebites, are taking heed to this message, as we share this drama story.”

He sent a Report of 36 showings to 2,472 people with 197 salvation decisions.

A PILGRIM’S PROGRESS
by Lane Anderson

Hawaii had been exotic to be sure - but Japan was next. The land of Shogun and the famous Ginza District.

But getting there would be its own unique adventure.

It wasn’t because I was so smart that I graduated from high school at a youthful 17. We just started school at a younger age in Michigan. It hadn’t quite occurred to me, when we boarded our flight from Honolulu to Tokyo on October 5, 1963, that we would be crossing the International Date Line. What was foremost on my mind was BOAC had bumped us into 1st Class for what would be my most luxurious flight ever, and certainly a Top 10 life experience. 1st Class service began immediately with fresh Hawaiian-grown pineapple juice in real glasses. But the real dining began shortly after take off. A major meal, course after course, and even your own carved prime rib of beef. The desert tray was outstanding in its own right. What a pre-birthday feast never to be forgotten.

Some time after lunch, a commemorative certificate was presented to all the passengers - at least those of us in 1st Class - Congratulations - You have just crossed the International Date Line. It was dated October 7, 1963. But wait. Something was terribly wrong here. What about October 6th. How can I turn 18 years old if we just flew right over my very important birthday. Am I 18 or 17? Am I now 63 or 62? How many other important dates have I missed over the years in a similar manner. But my 18th birthday! Yet, the experience in 1st Class seemed to make it all worthwhile. Especially later in life on our many other-than-luxurious carriers.

A fuel stop in Okinawa provided my only visit to that strategic island, as we soon headed to Tokyo, and my first experience in the Orient. What would it be like? How would the people react to Americans?

What I could not have known, however, was how often I would fly through Tokyo in future years, as God would direct Jill and me to Language Recording Projects all over Asia.
